The Book of Jude: A Call to Contend for the Faith (Bible Study)

To “contend,” according to Merriam-Webster, means to compete for something, to argue or assert that a statement is true. In our case as believers, I believe Jude was telling us to fight for our faith, our belief that Jesus is real and He is the only one true King.

Jude was clearly facing opposition, which is why we believe he wrote this letter to motivate us to keep pushing forward, stay alert, and keep the Holy Spirit leading, guiding, and revealing truth to us.

Why Study Jude?

The book of Epistle of Jude may be short, but it carries a weighty message for believers today. In just one chapter, Jude warns the body of Christ about false teaching, compromise, spiritual deception, and the danger of drifting away from genuine faith. Yet even in the warning, there is hope. Jude reminds believers that God is able to keep those who truly belong to Him.

That alone lets us know that there are some people who claim to belong to the Lord but they belong to their father, the devil.

John 8:44

"You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it." (NKJV)

This letter is not just for the early church. It speaks directly to the culture we are living in today. We are seeing people twist Scripture, normalize sin, reject conviction, and create versions of Christianity that require no surrender. All of these reveal the fact that many are not being led by the Holy Spirit, but instead are flesh driven.

Jude calls believers to wake up, remain grounded in truth, and fight for the faith with discernment, holiness, and love.

“Contend for the faith.”

Jude 1:3 says:

“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith…” (NKJV)

To “contend” according to Jude means to fight for, defend, and stand firmly upon the truth of God’s Word. This is not a physical fight. It is spiritual. It means refusing to compromise even when culture pressures you to.

As believers, we are not called to blend in with the world. We are called to stand apart.

Study Breakdown

1. False Teachers Don’t Always Look Dangerous

Jude 1:4

Jude warns that certain people had “crept in unnoticed.” This means deception is often subtle. False teaching does not always come wrapped in obvious rebellion. Sometimes it sounds motivational, loving, modern, or even “inclusive.”

The danger is when grace becomes an excuse for sin instead of the power to overcome it.

Reflection:

• Have I become more influenced by culture than by Scripture?

• Do I seek truth, or only messages that make me feel comfortable?

2. God Takes Holiness Seriously

Jude 1:5–7

Jude reminds readers of several examples of judgment:

• Israel in unbelief

• Fallen angels

• Sodom and Gomorrah

These examples show that God is loving, but He is also holy and just. Modern Christianity often emphasizes comfort while ignoring repentance. But holiness still matters to God.

We cannot claim intimacy with Christ while continually rejecting conviction.

“Be holy, for I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16

3. Rebellion Against God Leads to Destruction

Jude 1:8–13

Jude compares rebellious people to:

• Cain (self-will)

• Balaam (greed)

• Korah (rebellion against authority)

These people wanted the appearance of spirituality without true obedience.

This section challenges us deeply because rebellion does not always look loud. Sometimes rebellion is simply refusing correction, refusing surrender, or wanting God without transformation.

Heart Check:

• Do I resist conviction when God corrects me?

• Am I submitted to God, or only interested in the parts of faith that benefit me?

4. Build Yourself Up Spiritually

Jude 1:20–21

Jude shifts from warning into instruction.

Believers are told to:

• Build themselves up in faith

• Pray in the Holy Spirit

• Keep themselves in the love of God

• Wait on the mercy of Jesus

Spiritual maturity does not happen accidentally. We must intentionally remain connected to God.

Practical Ways to Build Your Faith:

• Daily prayer

• Reading Scripture consistently

• Fasting

• Worship

• Godly community

• Repentance

• Obedience even when difficult

5. Show Mercy While Remaining Discerned

Jude 1:22–23

One of the most beautiful parts of Jude is the balance between truth and compassion.

We are called to:

• Help those who are doubting

• Pull others from spiritual danger

• Show mercy with wisdom

As believers, we should never compromise truth, but we should also never lose compassion. Jesus corrected people, but He also loved deeply.

Conviction without love becomes harsh religion. Love without truth becomes compromise.

The Gospel requires both.

The Powerful Ending of Jude

Jude 1:24–25

Jude ends with one of the most comforting reminders in Scripture:

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,

And to present you faultless

Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy…” (NKJV)

This is the encouragement every believer needs.

Yes, the world is dark.

Yes, deception is increasing.

Yes, the walk can feel heavy.

But God is able to keep you.

Not by your own strength.

Not by perfection.

But by His power, grace, and Spirit.

Questions to Reflect on Your Heart

1. Am I truly standing on God’s Word, or am I allowing culture to shape my beliefs?

2. Have I mistaken God’s grace for permission to remain in sin?

3. What areas of my life still resist surrender?

4. Am I actively building my relationship with God daily?

5. How can I show both truth and love to others?

Closing Encouragement

The book of Jude is a warning, but it is also an invitation. An invitation to remain faithful in a compromised world. An invitation to walk in discernment. An invitation to stay surrendered to Christ fully.

Do not grow weary in your pursuit of holiness.

Do not become comfortable with compromise.

Do not allow the enemy to convince you that truth no longer matters.

The Lord is still calling His people to be set apart.

And for those who truly belong to Him, He is faithful to keep them.
