Learning Obedience in a Culture That Normalizes Compromise

The world and the flesh often work together to blur the truth about sex outside of marriage. Culture normalizes it, celebrates it, and even frames it as a natural part of dating. But when we measure it against the Word of God, we are confronted with a different standard, one that calls us to obedience, holiness, and trust in God’s design.
This is not about condemnation. It is not about shaming anyone for where they have been or what they have experienced, or where they are right now. The goal is not guilt, it is conviction. Because conviction, when led by the Holy Spirit, does not push us away from Jesus; it draws us closer to Him and into truth that transforms us.
There are times in life when we find ourselves in relationships or patterns that were never aligned with God’s will for us. What may have started as emotional connection can quickly become spiritual entanglement. And it is often not until we begin to truly fall in love with Jesus, learning His voice, His Word, and His ways, that our eyes are opened to what we couldn’t see before.
Walking in obedience over fleshly desire is not easy. Especially when sexual intimacy has become familiar, comforting, or tied to emotional attachment. But as we begin to surrender those desires, something shifts. Clarity begins to grow. We start to see the relationship more clearly, without the influence of physical connection clouding discernment. We begin to truly know the person and allow them to truly know us outside of physical expression.
Sex is not just physical. It carries spiritual weight. It has the ability to bond two people together in ways that go beyond emotion or intention. This is why it was designed by God for covenant, within marriage, because covenant provides protection, purpose, and alignment.
Outside of that covenant, those bonds can still form, even when the relationship is not meant to last. And that is where confusion, attachment, and misalignment can begin to grow (these things are not of God, but the enemy).

Choosing abstinence is not about restriction, it is about alignment. It is about trusting that God’s way is not meant to take anything good away from us, but to protect us, prepare us, and lead us into something healthier and more whole.
As we grow in obedience, we also grow in discernment. And as we grow in discernment, we begin to understand that God’s will is not meant to limit love, but to define it in its purest and safest form.
True freedom is not found in doing what feels natural to the flesh, but in surrendering to the One who knows us best.
In addition to sexual intimacy outside of marriage, many believers also wrestle with the topic of self sexual gratification and pornography. While the world often presents these things as “safe,” “normal,” or “harmless,” especially when no one else is involved, there is still a deeper spiritual and emotional impact that is often overlooked.
From a Christian perspective, these behaviors are closely tied to lust and the conditioning of the mind and heart toward sexual desires outside of God’s design. Pornography, in particular, can distort how we view intimacy, relationships, and even ourselves. It trains the mind to respond to fantasy rather than covenant, connection, and purity of heart.
This is not about shame, but about awareness. Many people find themselves in patterns they never intended to form, and over time, those patterns can affect how they relate to others emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Some believers describe this struggle in spiritual terms, recognizing lust as something that can feel binding or repetitive in nature. In certain Christian teachings, this is sometimes associated with what is referred to as a “Jezebel spirit,” a symbolic way of describing patterns of temptation, seduction, manipulation, and spiritual distraction that pull people away from obedience to God. Whether someone uses that terminology or not, the underlying truth remains the same: there are influences that attempt to draw the heart away from purity and devotion to Christ.
The response to these struggles is not condemnation, but repentance, renewal, and transformation through Christ. It is choosing to realign the mind, body, and spirit with God’s Word and allowing Him to heal what has been distorted.
Freedom comes through surrender, through prayer, accountability, and a willingness to walk away from anything that does not reflect God’s best. As believers grow in Christ, they begin to recognize that what once felt normal may not actually be beneficial for their spiritual walk.
And in that place of awareness, God brings conviction, not to destroy us, but to restore us.
Another important part of walking in sexual purity and obedience is accountability. God never designed believers to walk this journey alone. (Read that again)
Having godly accountability means surrounding yourself with people who not only know the Word of God, but also actively live it out in their daily lives. It is not just about what someone says, but what is demonstrated through their actions, character, and consistency.
True accountability brings correction, encouragement, and spiritual covering. It helps us stay grounded when emotions, temptation, or confusion try to pull us off course. When we are connected to people who are also pursuing Christ sincerely, they can help us recognize patterns, point us back to truth, and remind us of who we are in God when we begin to forget.

Accountability is not control, I repeat it is not control!
But protection. It is a safeguard that God uses to help shape us, strengthen us, and keep us aligned with His will as we grow in obedience.
If you made it down to the end of this message. Please join me in this prayer. It doesn’t matter where you are in life, married, single, engaged, not looking. This prayer covers all.
Closing Prayer🙏🏽
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, surrendering every desire, habit, and struggle that does not align with Your will. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Give us the strength to choose obedience over temptation, and the wisdom to recognize what pulls us away from You.
Lord, break every unhealthy attachment and pattern that is not from You. Help us to walk in purity, discipline, and truth. Surround us with godly accountability that sharpens and strengthens our faith. Your word says,”iron sharpens iron,” give us the discernment to recognize the iron around us. Teach us to honor You with our bodies, our minds, and our decisions.
Holy Spirit, lead us, convict us, and transform us daily so that our lives reflect Your glory. We choose Your way over our own.
In the mighty, matchless, and wonderful name of Jesus, Amen.
