Finding Jesus in Genesis

From the very beginning, Jesus was never an afterthought. Genesis does not mention His earthly name, but His presence, promise, and purpose are woven all throughout the book.

In Genesis, we see Jesus as the Word through whom creation came to be. When God spoke, life appeared. John 1:1 reminds us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

We see Jesus in the promised Seed in Genesis 3:15, where God declares that the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head. That was the first glimpse of the gospel, the first promise that sin, Satan, and death would not have the final word.

We see Jesus in Noah’s ark, the place of safety from judgment. Just as the ark carried Noah and his family through the flood, Jesus carries us from death into life.

We see Jesus in Abraham’s promised son, reminding us that God keeps His covenant even when the promise seems impossible.

We see Jesus in Isaac on the altar, where a beloved son was offered, yet God provided a ram in his place. This points us to Christ, the Son who would truly be sacrificed for us.

We see Jesus in Joseph, rejected by his brothers, falsely accused, humbled, then exalted to save many lives. What looked like betrayal became the very path God used for deliverance.

Genesis shows us that Jesus was present in the plan from the beginning. Before the law, before the cross, before the empty tomb, God was already revealing His rescue story.

Heart Check:

Am I reading Scripture only for information, or am I looking for Christ in every part of God’s story?

The gospel did not begin in Matthew. The promise started in Genesis.
