When Love Becomes an Idol: Putting God Back in His Proper Place

There was a conversation my mother in law shared with me that truly shook my heart.

She told me about her first husband. After they got married, he moved her to Tampa, and only seven months later, he passed away.

In her grief, she cried out to the Lord asking, “Why would You allow this to happen?”

And she said the Lord responded:

“Because I had to move what you placed before Me. You said you loved Me, but you loved him more.”

When she shared that with me, she said, “I don’t know why the Lord wanted me to tell you this.”

But I knew exactly why.

Because so many of us say we love God, yet our lives reveal that He is not truly first.

We idolize people.

We idolize relationships.

We idolize our spouses, children, jobs, businesses, ministries, pastors, churches, social status, money, and even ourselves.

And the scary part is many of us do it without even realizing it.

The Lord commanded us clearly:

“You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Exodus 20:3

Many people think idols only mean statues or false gods people physically bow down to.

But an idol is anything that takes God’s rightful place in your heart.

Anything you place above obedience to Him becomes an idol.

Anything you fear losing more than losing intimacy with God can become an idol.

Anything that controls your emotions, your focus, your time, your loyalty, or your identity more than Christ has become a god in your heart.

Jesus said:

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

Matthew 10:37

That scripture is heavy, but it reveals the seriousness of God’s desire to be first in our lives.

God is not asking us not to love people.

He is asking us not to worship them.

Because the truth is, people will fail us.

People leave. Our children grow up.

People die.

Jobs change.

Churches disappoint us.

Money comes and goes.

But God remains.

Sometimes the Lord allows shaking, trials, and tribulations in our lives because He loves us too much to allow us to continue building our identity on things that cannot save us.

Hebrews 12:27 says:

“The removing of those things that are being shaken… that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.”

God wants to be our foundation.

Not our relationships.

Not our titles.

Not our success.

Not even ministry itself.

Sometimes we can become so consumed with “doing for God” that we stop actually being with God.

That is why heart posture matters.

I encourage you today:

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what may be sitting on the throne of your heart.

Not with condemnation.

Not with shame.

But with honesty.

Pray:

“Holy Spirit show me anything I have placed above the Lord. Reveal every idol hidden in my heart. Teach me how to truly put Jesus first.”

Because when God is truly first, everything else begins to fall into proper order.

Your marriage.

Your children.

Your business.

Your ministry.

Your career.

Your purpose.

Matthew 6:33 reminds us:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

When Jesus becomes the center, everything connected to His will for your life begins aligning the way it was always meant to.

Not perfectly.

But properly.

And the beautiful thing is this:

God is not trying to take from us.

He is trying to save us from building our lives around things that were never meant to carry the weight of our worship.

So today, check your heart.

Not just your words.

Not just your church attendance.

Not just your social media posts about God.

But your real heart posture.

What sits first in your life?

Because whatever sits on the throne of your heart will ultimately guide your life.
