When Ambition Isn’t Strength, but Fear in Disguise (A Mother’s Day Reflection)

Motherhood
It will pull something out of you that nothing else can.
It will make you stronger.
More alert.
More protective.
More driven than you’ve ever been before.
And somewhere in that process, many of us step into what the world celebrates as ambition.
We become the woman who can do it all.
The one with the plan, the backup plan, and the backup to the backup plan.
The one stacking degrees, certifications, skills, and opportunities, just in case.
And from the outside, it looks powerful.
But this blog is a gentle heart check…
What if some of that ambition isn’t strength at all
but fear in disguise?
The Woman Who Made Sure She’d Never Be Without
Many of us have lived this story.
We pushed ourselves to:
Go to school
Get the degree
Go back and get another one
Start the business
Learn multiple skills
Become self-sufficient in every way possible
Why?
So we would never be in a position where we couldn’t provide.
So we would never have to depend on anyone.
So if anything went wrong, we had something to fall back on.
And let’s be clear, there is nothing wrong with being capable.
But here’s the question we don’t ask enough
Where is it coming from?
Ambition or Anxiety?
Because there’s a difference between:
Operating in your gifts
…and
Operating in fear of lack
You can be building, striving, achieving…
and still be driven by a quiet fear that says:
“What if this isn’t enough?”
“What if everything falls apart?”
“What if I can’t provide?”
So you keep going.
Keep adding.
Keep stacking.
Not because you’re called to all of it…
…but because you’re afraid to not have it.
Fear Will Dress Itself Up as Responsibility
Especially for mothers.
Fear doesn’t always show up as panic.
Sometimes it shows up as:
Overworking
Overplanning
Overcommitting
Never resting
And we justify it with:
“I’m just making sure my kids are good.”
“I’m just being responsible.”
“I just want to have options.”
But underneath all of that can be a deeper truth:
You don’t fully trust that God will sustain you.
And that’s not condemnation, that’s awareness.
Because once you see it, you can surrender it.
You Were Never Meant to Carry It All
Motherhood can make you feel like everything depends on you.
But it doesn’t.
God never designed you to be:
The provider and the protector and the planner of every outcome
The one holding everything together by your own strength
That pressure?
It will wear you down.
Because you’re carrying something you were never meant to hold alone.
Being “A Jill of All Trades” Isn’t the Issue
Let’s clear this up:
There is nothing wrong with being skilled, gifted, and versatile.
But the concern is not what you do,
it’s why you’re doing it.
Are you:
Walking in purpose?
or
Running from fear?
Because fear will have you busy in areas God never called you to.
It will keep you exhausted, distracted, and stretched thin…
while convincing you that you’re doing the right thing.
A Word for Mothers This Mother’s Day
To the mothers reading this:
You don’t have to prove that you can do everything.
You don’t have to secure every outcome.
You don’t have to live in “just in case.”
Your children don’t just need a provider…
They need a present, peaceful, and trusting mother.
One who:
Walks in faith
Rests in God
Moves with purpose, not pressure
Because what you model, they will carry.
When You Shift from Fear to Faith
Everything begins to change when you surrender that fear.
You still:
Work
Build
Plan
But now you do it from a place of trust, not anxiety.
You’re no longer trying to control every outcome…
You’re allowing God to lead your steps.
And there’s a peace that comes with that, that no amount of ambition can give you.
I thought I was just being ambitious.
Driven. Determined. Prepared.
But when I really sat with it…
I realized I was afraid.
Afraid of not having enough.
Afraid of things falling apart.
Afraid of being in a position where I couldn’t provide.
And that fear had me moving in ways that looked strong…
but felt exhausting.
God had to show me that I don’t have to carry all of that.
That He is my source.
That He is my provider.
That He is my security.
And once I released that fear…
I found peace I didn’t know I was missing.
Final Truth
You were made to nurture, to lead, to love…
But not to live in fear.
So this Mother’s Day, give yourself something deeper than celebration.
Give yourself permission to release the pressure.
Because you are not just a woman who makes things happen…
You are a woman who is covered, guided, and sustained by God.
And that?
Is more than enough.
Before you go…

— The Surrendered Walk

This speaks to many, me included. How we grind and beat ourselves up when we feel like we have not done enough. I have had this reflection of am I doing to much and Am I setting a bad example. But now, this reminds me to reflect on the why?
